“Team Meals” Survives the 2011 LA Marathon
Despite the soggy weather on March 20th, 2011, Team Meals finished the LA Marathon with smiles as they raised over $18,000 for Meals on Wheels West (MOWW). “We are excited to have been able to be a part of this worthwhile event,” said Team member John Madigan. “We got wet and cold, but the money we raised means that 8 people who can’t care for themselves will receive lunch and dinner, the daily newspaper, fresh fruit, companionship, dignity and independence for one full year,” said Team member and MOWW President and CEO RoseMary Regalbuto. “It doesn’t get much better than that.”
The Team met early in the morning at Dodger Stadium before starting the race. “Luckily, there was a Team Meals suite at Dodger Stadium where we relaxed, ate breakfast and, most importantly, stayed warm and dry,” said Madigan. According to Team Meals member Albin Gielicz, “without the Team Meals events, gear and Dodger Stadium suite, this Marathon would have been a complete wash, literally.”
Team members participated in a professional training program that was “one of the perks of being a Team Meals member,” says Regalbuto, “not to mention free Team gear, free marathon registration, fun Team events and a Team Meals Cheer Zone at Mile 25.” The Team Meals Cheer Zone had volunteers and staff cheering for all 14 Team Meals members who completed the race. “It was extremely cold and wet,” said Elizabeth Adams, MOWW’s Executive Assistant, “but it was the least we could do to stand out here and cheer for 8 hours when our Team is out there running and walking for 8 hours.” According to Team member Lisa Foux, “to see and hear them at Mile 25 warmed me on so many levels.”
“We are very proud of Team Meals, ranging in age from 17-70, with 15 out of 16 members crossing the finish line despite the terrible weather,” said Regalbuto. “We can’t wait for next year.”
Team Meals will continue to accept donations until April 15, 2011.
