A pedestrian was hit by a vehicle while crossing Ocean Avenue at Arizona Avenue at 3:20 a.m. on Tuesday. The Santa Monica Police Department said Monday that the pedestrian, a 64-year-old transient in Santa Monica, later died at a local hospital.

The driver, a 66-year-old resident of Santa Clarita, was headed north on Ocean and, as he was approaching Arizona, hit the pedestrian. The pedestrian had been crossing Ocean, heading west, on the south side of Arizona. He was walking outside the crosswalk, according to police.

The pedestrian was in critical condition after the collision. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.

The driver was interviewed at the location where the collision occurred. He was subsequently released.

The SMPD is continuing to investigate the incident, which came in the wake of two fatal traffic collisions in Santa Monica. One occurred Dec. 23 at the intersection of Wilshire and 14th when a 66-year-old Santa Monica resident who was using the crosswalk was killed by a vehicle. That had been the city's first fatal traffic collision since Dec. 15, 2009.

The second collision happened on the morning of Feb. 12, also on Wilshire, east of 20th. Another Santa Monica resident, 23-year-old Anupam Sanyal, died when his car slammed into a palm tree after a drag race. Police are still investigating the incident.

Police are asking the public for information regarding the fatal collision that happened at Ocean at Arizona, as well as the drag-racing incident. The SMPD is asking those who have information to contact Detective Chris Dawson at 310-458-8954 or Sgt. A reward of as much as $1,000 may be offered regarding either incident, if the information leads to an arrest and conviction.
