Arizona Men Charged in Beating Plead 'Not Guilty'
Bryan Scott Hale and Brett E. Davis were arraigned Tuesday on attempted murder charges after losing their fight against extradition.
Four months after authorities allege they nearly beat a man to death outside a Santa Monica bar, Arizona residents Bryan Scott Hale and Brett E. Davis entered not guilty pleas Tuesday.
Dark-haired Hale, 24, of Tempe, and bald-headed Davis, 25, of Fountain Hills, AZ, lost their fight against extradition from Arizona and were booked into the Santa Monica jail on Friday. A judge set their bail at $1 million.
A District Attorney's Office spokeswoman said they are due back in court Jan. 31 to schedule a preliminary hearing.
If they’re found guilty, the men could be sentenced to life in state prison.
The gruesome beating, which authorities said was unprovoked, occurred early in the morning of Sept. 22 near Busby's. The victim was shadow-boxing as he walked and jogged down Santa Monica Boulevard.
As a result of the beating, he sustained a collapsed skull, multiple brain bleeds, a broken jaw, and fractures to the neck and back.
Davis and Hale were in the Los Angeles area to do work for an unidentified moving company. They were reportedly seen fleeing the scene following the beating.

Monster's like this if proven guilty should have the book thrown at them! An unprovoked beating of this kind should not be rewarded by mercy. If this is not dealt with firmly, justice in this town will become a mockery of which it is already. Remember we started 2011 with more than 500 rape kits unprocessed, a police detective terrorizing Oscar De La Torre, his organization's employees, and his pregnant wife harrassed as well. Why? Because it was a political hit as Oscar was thinking of running for the city council. Oscar demanded more police accountability and that was the last thing that they wanted. Would that happen to Bobby Shriver? No way! The irony of it all is that we are told by the same police dept. that crime is down. Tell that to Whitey Bulger because we residents who see crime all around us simply do not believe it!!
