Giant Cornucopia-Shaped Things at Civic Center Park

The larger of two odd looking, albeit eye catching, steel structures that will serve as overlooks atop a hill at Santa Monica's Palisades Garden Walk was installed this week.

Weighing in at 32,000 pounds, the overlook was too big to be transported from the fabricator's steel yard to the park, so it was was delivered in six pieces to a nearby beach parking lot and welded together, according to Julie Silliman, who works in the city's community and cultural services department.

"It was transported Tuesday night to Ocean Avenue... [where] a crane operator expertly lifted it from a flatbed truck onto its base," Silliman said. "The patrons at Chez Jay’s had a great view. By dawn, the overlook was welded into place."

Park-goers who walk up "Observation Hill" and step into the overlooks—the larger of which measures 18 feet tall, 23 feet wide and 25 feet long—will be treated to ocean views.

More colorful versions that sort of resemble Easter eggs and that are designed to serve as play forts are already in place in a section of the park dubbed Discovery Hill. "Kids get smaller versions for play," Silliman said.

The six-acre Palisades Garden Walk was designed by James Corner Field Operations, the same team behind The High Line in New York City. It is one of two new parks under construction at the Civic Center.

Ground broke in the spring of 2012 and the park is scheduled to open by the end of this year.
