Edison: Power Fully Restored to 2,800 Customers

Some 500 Santa Monica customers were in the dark until about 9 p.m. Monday.

Updated at 10 a.m. Wednesday with comments from a resident affected by the outage.

A faulty underground cable is to blame for a power outage that left thousands of Southern California Edison customers in the Ocean Park and Sunset Park neighborhoods without power, some late into the night Monday.

The utility company said this morning that 2,800 customers were affected by the outage that began just after 1 p.m. Monday.

Power was restored to about half of the customers two hours later, and to about 2,300 customers by about 9 p.m. Monday, according to spokeswoman Lois Pitter Bruce.

Resident Gavin Baxter said his power wasn't restored until much later.

"I was told it would be 6 a.m.," he said. "I went to sleep around midnight so cannot tell you when it was restored, but for many on Pacific, south of 11th, it was out way past 9 p.m."

The outage was within the area of Pico Boulevard on the north, Euclid Street on the east, Ocean Park Boulevard on the south, and Lincoln Boulevard on the west.

Santa Monica College kicked on its back-up generators after a brief self-evacuation that was prompted in part by the outage, and also a suspected gas leak. The leak was actually the release of a non-toxic chemical from the Big Blue Bus yard.
