Free Lessons to Celebrate Int'l Surfing Day

The Surf Academy will provide lessons June 20 at Tower 26 as the West LA/Malibu chapter of the Surfrider Foundation celebrates the ocean and surfing.

A yoga class, free surf lessons and a beach cleanup will highlight the Surfrider Foundation's celebration of International Surfing Day June 20 at Tower 26 in Santa Monica.

"Surfing Day celebrates the sport of surfing and helps raise awareness about issues facing our oceans, waves and beaches," the foundation's West LA/Malibu chapter said in a press release.

The Surf Academy will be on hand with boards and instructors to offer free lessons, and the first 50 volunteers to arrive for the beach cleanup, scheduled to to start at 6 a.m., will receive a free breakfast.

Professional surfer Nick Rosza and author Jesse Aizenstat will be in attendance to share their love of surf and protecting oceans.

Registration and activities begin at 5:30 a.m. with a paddle out. Food trucks are scheduled to arrive at 6 a.m. The event ends at 9 a.m.

Tower 26 is located at Ocean Park Boulevard and Barnard Way in Santa Monica. Parking is available in Lot South No. 5, about a half block south of Ocen Park.
