Groundbreaking Ceremony at Santa Monica High School

Construction of a new Science and Technology Building at Santa Monica High School is underway, and the district recently held a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate.

and Measure BB Advisory Committee Member, Judith Meister, were among those on hand last week to offer overviews of the project and participate in the groundbreaking.

The construction project will consist of replacing the current science and technology buildings with one building that will house 15 science labs, 18 classrooms, two special education classrooms, administrative offices, an auto shop, and a computer lab. There will also be outdoor improvements which will include a 50-space, bicycle parking area.

"The new Science and Technology Building will enrich the learning experience for students while providing examples of sustainable architecture throughout the construction process," said Stuart Sam, Director of the Facility Improvements Office. "The new building will also provide state-of-the-art technology, which will prepare students for college and careers in today’s competitive job market."

The construction project is the largest in the Measure BB program, according to Sam.

The $55 million dollar project began last December and is expected to be completed by late 2014.
