Metal Floats 'Effortlessly' From Hangar Ceiling

Amy Jean Boebel draped aluminum mesh screens in a ceiling-strung installation on display through March at the Santa Monica Art Studios complex.

Artist Amy Jean Boebel folded, crushed, draped and twirled aluminum wire screens to look like clouds in a ceiling-suspended installation on display now at the complex.

Titled "Billow," the installment is strung 22 feet above ground in an historic hangar at the Santa Monica airport. It was initially on display as a temporary exhibit, but will remain through March, the artist announced last week.

“I like working with screen, it is very pliable and translucent, like a sturdy silk organza,” she said. “My goal was to create a cloud-like sculpture, and a new environment for the room, by hanging layers of screen in a way that they would seemingly float effortlessly from above. Visitors say that the space is very peaceful, almost meditative.”
