Santa Monica to Host Million Puppet March

Third Street Promenade could be overrun by puppets on Sunday as sponsors try to hold the largest puppet parade ever.

Puppeteers and their friends will attempt to break a world record in Santa Monica by organizing the largest puppet parade ever on Sunday at 10 a.m. along the Third Street Promenade.

The parade is the concluding event of the L.A. Puppet Fest, a month-long puppet festival that included performances, films, workshops and exhibits around the city.

Organizers of the Million Puppet March in Santa Monica encourage people to bring a puppet or make one at the parade. There will be prizes offered, including two tickets to a behind-the-scenes tour of Jim Henson Co.'s Hollywood lot.

A puppet march in Washington, D.C., was held in November to support public broadcasting, but the Santa Monica march is all about family fun, said organizer Michael Bellavia.

Puppets can also be donated to the Puppets for Peace Drive, which aims to promote peace through puppetry. The drive is now collecting puppets to send to the school attended by 8-year-old Martin Richard, who died in the Boston Marathon bombings last week.
