SM Resident Is LA Orchestra's New President
Also, another Santa Monican joins LACO's board of directors.
In news that will be music to the ears of Santa Monicans, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra has announced that SM resident K. Eugene Shutler is its new president. Furthermore, another Santa Monican, Roberto Apelfeld, has joined the LACO's board of directors.
Incidentally, LACO will perform at the Santa Monica residence of Consul General of Azerbaijan on Sunday at 4 p.m. The fund-raising event, called LACO à la Carte, will feature performances by clarinet player and Composer-in-Residence Derek Bermel, along with pianist and LACO Sound Investment Composer Timothy Andres.
The 43-year-old LACO is regarded as one of the most reputed musical ensembles in the world. Public Radio International called it “America's finest chamber orchestra."

LACO's previous president, Michael Rosen, is now serving as chairman after holding his past post for four years. Shutler, a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Yale Law School, has served as general counsel for Continental Airlines and MGM Grand; he was on the latter organization's board of directors as well.
“Gene and Michael are visionary leaders,” LACO Executive Director Rachel Fine said in a statement. “Their keen business acumen and deep commitment to LACO provide a solid foundation critical to the Orchestra’s continued growth and success.”

Apelfeld is the head of International Risk Management and Portfolio Risk Analysis at Western Asset Management Company, which is based in Pasadena. He attended the Pontifical Catholic University, the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics and the University of Chicago.
“We are very pleased to welcome Roberto [and fellow new board members] Dana [Newman] and Jamie [Ohl]," Fine said. "They are highly successful and forward-thinking professionals who have demonstrated outstanding leadership throughout their professional careers.”
LACO's annual program includes three Westside Connections chamber music concerts at Santa Monica's . The orchestra also performs seven Orchestral Series concerts, five Baroque Conversations concerts, three Family Concerts, a Concert Gala and an annual Discover concert, all throughout Los Angeles.
