'Thank You, Mr. Falker': A Tribute to Learning

The Morgan-Wixson Theatre brings a popular children's book to life.

The Morgan-Wixson Theatre, well-known for its lively adaptations of children's literature, has brought the popular Patricia Polacco book Thank You, Mr. Falker to the stage.

Part of the L.A. Festival of New American Musicals, this timely story blends themes of bullying, love of learning, individuality and persistence, with a dab of humor. The cast, mainly composed of talented locals, thrives under the direction of Lane Williamson.

Sophie Smith, in the lead as young Trisha, demonstrates an impressive vocal range, especially considering that she is only in the sixth grade. Additionally, Gary Gardner's Grandpa is so jovial and loving that it almost seems a shame he is not in more scenes. The same can be said of Nick Tubbs in the title role of the inspiring Mr. Falker and Chandler David as Eric.

The lovely songs, by local composer Sarah Taylor Ellis and writer Andrew Bentz, not only help move the story along but also invoke feelings. As Trisha sings of never being able to get up to speed, and Grandpa and Mom (Nina Andro) duet of the sweetness of knowledge, the audience recalls their own experiences.

At the first performance, the audience gave the actors a standing ovation. It was sweet to see children give other children such hearty applause. Anyone who has struggled in school will delight in this production!
