Henry Waxman, Climate March, Fred Segal and More

Here are five things to know in Santa Monica today.

1. The Santa Monica Democratic Club will host Henry Waxman tonight at the Santa Monica Library at 7 p.m. Details here.

2. The Newport Folk Festival is headed to Santa Monica. Known as Newport Folk Presents Way Over Yonder, the Oct. 5-6 event will feature performances from Conor Oberst, Neko Case and several other performers playing on two stages on the Santa Monica Pier.

3. The Great March for Climate Action is still looking for a few good marchers. It’s still well short of its goal of 1,000 coast-to-coast participants, but it has succeeded in attracting 55 people to date from 23 states and two foreign countries. The 8-month trek is scheduled to start in March 2014 in Santa Monica and end in Washington D.C.  You can sign up here.

4. Remember how Gwyneth Paltrow received her motorcycle license in Santa Monica last week? Well, her husband, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin received his driver’s license and motorcycle license at the Santa Monica DMV the following day. Let us know if you see them in town!
