Cold Snap Grips Southland Till Tuesday

Several weather advisories issued by the National Weather Service are in effect Wednesday.

Stiff winds lashed The Southland Wednesday as the region remained in the grips of a cold snap and several communities were expected to remain in the high 50s and low 60s.

The National Weather Service reported that the most powerful wind gusts recorded this morning were 49 miles per hour at Sandberg in the Antelope Valley and 45 mph at Whitaker Peak in the Los Angeles County portion of the San Gabriel Mountains.

Several weather advisories issued by the National Weather Service are in effect Wednesday. In the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys and the Santa Monica Recreational area, a wind advisory was due to expire at 10 this morning, and a frost advisory was to be in force from midnight to 9 Thursday morning.

A wind advisory was also to be in force until 10 this morning in the San Gabriel Mountains. In the Antelope Valley, a freeze warning will be in effect from 9 tonight until 10 Friday morning.

The National Weather Service forecast highs Wednesday of 36 on Mount Wilson; 48 in Palmdale and Lancaster; 55 in Saugus; 59 in Avalon, Pasadena, San Gabriel and Woodland Hills; 60 in Burbank; 61 Long Beach and at LAX; 62 in downtown L.A. and Anaheim; and 63 in Newport Beach.

The brisk weather is a product of a cold front out of Alaska. A long- term NWS forecast indicated no warming trend until Tuesday.
