Santa Monica's cozy fireside performances at the Miles Memorial Playhouse get underway Friday night with New Orleans jazz and funk featuring Scott Detweiler to be followed Saturday with holiday music by Maria Vargo & Friends.
Now in its fourth season, the "Fireside at the Miles" series includes 16 separate events—including contemporary music, opera, jazz, dance, poetry, beat-boxing, comedy and a capella—over seven weekends through Jan. 26.
The performances take place in the historic Spanish revival style playhouse beside the big, rustic fireplace. The usual seating arrangements are replaced with a more intimate setup of couches, coffee tables, candles and an organic tea and snack bar.
This year’s performers include the Golden State Pops Orchestra, folk musicians David Poe and Amy Raasch, jazz guitarist Scott Detweiler, sculptural sound and dance group String Theory, local a capella group Frequency singing pop favorites and this year the first fireside community talent show. For a complete lineup of performers and to make reservations visit fireside.milesplayhouse.org.
Doors open at 7:15 p.m. Performances are 8-10 p.m. All events are youth-friendly. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for seniors (55 and over), students and kids (17 and under). Discounted rates are available for groups of 10 or more.
The playhouse is at Reed Park1130 Lincoln Blvd.
