Help Santa Monica Become a Better, Safer Place to Walk

There's a new online portal for you to take a survey and share opinions about walking in Santa Monica. You can also attend a public workshop later this month.

Santa Monica is considered one of the most walkable large cities in California, but sometimes, it can also feel like a death trap.

To improve safety and to make the future Expo Light Rail stations accessible to pedestrians, city officials are working on a guide, called the Pedestrian Action Plan, that they aim to complete by the end of the year. Before they release a draft, they want to hear from the public.

A workshop for residents to provide input to city planners is set for 7 p.m. Jan. 28 at the East Wing of the Civic Center Auditorium, 1855 Main St. Participation is also encouraged via an online forum, pedplan.santamonicatownhall.org. The page asks questions, such as, "what makes you feel safe when you are walking?" (one answer: Forbid cyclists on sidewalks.)

Here's the latest update on the plan from the spring edition of Seascape, the city's quarterly newsletter:

The Pedestrian Action Plan will identify locations that need to be improved now and also look toward the changes that will be necessary to help residents and visitors make the best use of Santa Monica’s three Expo light rail stations opening in 2016.

The plan will also inform the city’s ongoing and future enforcement and public safety campaigns. All of this requires community input—and that’s where you come in.

The City of Santa Monica asks you to help us discover what’s unique about walking in Santa Monica and what can be done to make it safer and more enjoyable. We’ll hold the first public workshop on January 28, 2013 (see inset), where participants’ input will be used to help shape the Pedestrian Action Plan to make sure our residents and visitors can continue to “walk the walk.”

Community groups can request a presentation from city staffers about the plan by calling (310) 458-8298 or emailing francie.stefan@smgov.net.

Jenna, thanks for asking, for those of us who have been watching for the last 50 years? Its over, there is no solution! How does one provide for the common safety when there is such an attraction of people and vehicles?
In England, trains and car crossings are not on the same grade, but here comes the light rail when will the inevitable happen there too? Does any one seriously think Ocean ave will be a new promenade? Like some one at CalTrans once said, 'if we build it, they will hit it'!

You really think there's no solution, stewart? How about fixing the non-signalized crosswalks on Wilshire Boulevard, or eliminating them entirely? I often hear drivers complain about how hard is it to see pedestrians there, especially when they're standing in the middle of the crosswalk and in the landscaped median. There's been several recent pedestrian deaths on the busy boulevard.

I am sorry Jenna, it seems no matter what is done we see people hurt, and worse. Several years ago it was Ocean Park blvd every other week it seemed, the city painted Abbey rd crosswalks, then blinking lights in the roadway. It just seems with more and more pedestrians, cyclists, and traffic that predictably the incidents do go up.
Everybody has a responsibility to be aware of their surroundings. And even that is not enough unless we start blocking off more and more streets, and thats not going to happen on Ocean ave.

Add those blinking lights on the GROUND of EVERY crosswalk in the city of Santa Monica, especially on Wilshire Blvd!

Maybe do less ticketing of cars and more ticketing of drivers, post mph signs and have the cops drive appropriately. This town has it's priorities wrong. Bikes r on the sidewalks because the streets r unsafe for everyone. People here don't know how to value human life.

Vice President Joe Biden tried Tuesday to rally Congress to act on gun control legislation, sayingRead More that "the country has changed and [politicians] will pay a political price for not getting engaged and dealing with gun safety." "As proud as the president and I am of the progress we have made, we need Congress to act," Biden said in a speech delivered at the White House. "The American people are demanding it. We need to make sure that the voices of the ones we lost are the loudest ones we here in this fight." Specifically, Biden was referring to politicians like Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), who saw her approval rating plummet after she voted against legislation that would expand background checks. Sen. Jeff Flake's (R-AZ) and Sen. Mark Begich's (D-AK) ratings also took a nosedive. On the otherside, Democrats in red states, like Sens. Mary Landrieu (LA) and Kay Hagan (NC), got a slight boost in their approval ratings after they voted in favor of the gun control legislation. The vice president also released a set of federal guidelines Tuesday for developing high quality emergency operations for schools, higher education institutions and places of worship. "We made sure the guide reflects all the lessons we've learned over the years," he said.
