L.A. Waterkeeper Celebrates 20 Years

More than 300 people celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Los Angeles Waterkeeper last week at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica.

“We’ve had some great successes in 20 years”, said Liz Crosson, Executive Director of Los Angeles Waterkeeper, “and I think that the water quality and the quality of the environment in L.A. really speaks to those successes, but, there’s still a long way to go.”

The organization celebrated its success in the courtroom, including arguing a case at the U.S. Supreme Court against the L.A. County Flood Control District to stop polluted runoff flowing into Los Angeles’ rivers and bays.

L.A. Waterkeeper also recently reached a settlement agreement with the city of Malibu to improve water quality and reduce the risk of sickness at some of Malibu’s most frequented beaches.

The event raised nearly $330,000 in support of Los Angeles Waterkeeper’s programs to protect and restore the bays, beaches and rivers of L.A. County. Funds will directly go towards monitoring sources of pollution, restoring habitats, and enforcing environmental laws to protect and improve ocean and river environments.

The honorees of The Founders’ Circle included: Richard Baskin, Dam Emmett, Jordan Kaplan, Gil Segel, Terry Tamminen, Frank & Luanne Wells.
