Why go: After a several weeks of funk, African rock and salsa, get ready to mellow out. Lo-fi, surf pop melodies from the up-and-coming Los Angeles-based indie duo Best Coast will close out the 28th Annual Twilight Concert Series at the pier.

FASHION'S NIGHT OUT
Where/When: Various locations; 6-11 p.m. Thursday
Why go: Dozens of retailers in the major shopping districts of Santa Monica, including Santa Monica Place, the Third Street Promenade and Montana Avenue, will host special sales and give free mini makeovers and other special giveaways as part of the nationwide event designed to celebrate fashion and help kick start the economy. Why go: Community activists will commemorate the second anniversary of Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoonist Paul Conrad's death with a candlelight vigil. Conrad created Chain Reaction, a threatened anti-nuke sculpture just outside the Santa Monica Civic Center.

405 FREEWAY CLOSURES COMMUNITY MEETING
Where/When: 2701 N Sepulveda Blvd., Los Angeles; 6-8 p.m. Thursday
Why go: Wondering how your commute will be impacted by construction this fall? As one of five community meetings to be held this year, Metro representatives will give an update on 405 freeway closures for the Sepulveda Pass Improvement Project. During a Q&A session, share concerns with the project's planning staffers.
