San Vicente Reopens After Tree Falls

The eastbound lane from Ocean to Fourth was closed for about three hours Saturday afternoon.

A big coral tree toppled over Saturday afternoon from the grassy center median on San Vicente Boulevard. Its limbs spilled out onto the eastbound lane, which was closed from Ocean Avenue to Fourth Street for about three hours.

City officials said they didn't yet know why the tree fell, but suspected age might have been a factor.

"They're beautiful trees, it's such a shame," said 25-year Santa Monica resident David Kirk. He sat nearby smoking a cigarette as crews worked to move the tree off the road.
