Santa Monica Has State's Fifth Most Expensive Auto Insurance Rates

Santa Monica is the fifth most expensive city in California to insure a car.

That's the finding of an auto insurance study from ValuePenguin.com, which looked at auto insurance costs across 210 cities, 30 driver profiles and 52 companies to arrive at the average costs and city rankings.

Annual rates in Santa Monica average 36 percent higher than other cities in the Golden State -- at $1,537 for single drivers and $1,445 for married couples.

The four other cities that ranked higher were Glendale, Los Angeles, Inglewood and Culver City, whose rates were higher than the state average by 62 percent, 44 percent, 41 percent and 38 percent respectively.

On the other hand, the cheapest cities in the study's sample were Calexico, Lewiston and Yreka.
