Santa Monica to Plant Chinese Elms for Arbor Day

The trees are being planted on 22nd Street between Carlyle and Marguerita in the northern Montana neighborhood.

Two Chinese Elms will be planted later this month as part of a celebration of Arbor Day in Santa Monica.

The special tree planting ceremony, which is put on by the city of Santa Monica and the Santa Monica Lions Club Chapter, is set for 11 a.m. May 23 at 428 22nd St., according to Erin Hamant of Santa Monica's Public Landscape Division.

This event marks Santa Monica's 32nd year as a Tree City U.S.A.

The Chinese Elm is a deciduous tree species noted for its weeping appearance, Hamant said. The trees are expected to grow up to 60 feet tall and provide shade.
