Who's Santa Monica's Person of the Year?

TIME magazine named President Obama its person of the year for the second time. Tell us who you think should win from our town!

On Dec. 19, Time magazine named President Obama its Person of the Year, again.

The magazine invited votes on 40 candidates, including the president, Gabby Douglas and Kim Jong Un. Other options included The Mars Rover and the Higgs Boson Particle, Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi, and Apple CEO Tim Cook. But, the president took the title again four years after he first won the award as president-elect in 2008.

But who cares about the same-old, same-old? Who is Santa Monica’s Person of the Year—the man or woman who, in Timespeak, “most influenced the news this year for better or worse”?

Tell us your pick and why he or she should be Santa Monica’s Person of the Year by Monday, Dec. 31, in the comment section below.

I nominate Councilmember Kevin McKeown, as a placeholder for the resident-in-general, who is going to take over in 2013 and 2014 and change SM forever. Now that federal and state questions that distracted in 2012 are going along as the election determined they would, it is time for this Person of the Year to focus on local issues and take control. The Person in the Street Councilmember McKeown represents is the Person of the Year in SM. That Person is suffering from gridlock traffic, not seeing the sky, pollution, congestion, and parking policies meaning when combined with traffic no resident can get through tourists or afford the high-priced stores to shop downtown anymore. But the Person has woken up, like a sleeping dog who finally got kicked too much.. This Person got kicked enough by the arrogant Council this year to make a big change already. Development of Village Trailer Park did not go as planned. The Bergamot Area Plan was not slipped through as also planned. Consultants hired to slip through a 180 degree change in the Downtown Area Plan did not succeed. This Person is everywhere, speaking out against deception and selling out what is left of the City to developers and tourists rather than residents. This Person will become a roaring lion by the end of 2013, but deserves to be recognized already for having changed the tenor of local news in 2012. No more business-as-usual by the Developers' Lapdog Council..

Santa Monica Activist Jerry Rubin for being that guy who champions the way of peace

Absolutely right, Brenda and Peter. No one else epitomizes what is best about SM.
Dan Charney December 29, 2012 at 03:35 AM
Kevin McKeown definitely BB- I love Jerry - who doesn't? But our great white hopes at this point to stop the ruination of SM are Kevin and Ted W- we want to believe Ted will come through too- who are we? You who love destroying our beach side community? We- are those who don't want that to happen.

I think it is fair to say that Kevin McKeown has come through for the residents of Santa Monica in extraordinary ways this year. The quality and effectiveness of his leadership has been most apparent in dealing with Village Trailer Park, but that issue is emblematic for all the other issues related to it when it comes to the rights of residents in this city.

Councilman Kevin McKeown is one of the finest elected representatives in the country, let alone, Santa Monica. He shows up. He works hard. He gets it. And he puts people first. He's the kind of public servant others should aspire to be... And he will have my vote and support. There are many people in Santa Monica who work and care about our city. He gets my vote and should have yours, too.

Kevin McKeown for all the reasons given above. If the City Council had any integrity, he would have been named "mayor" many times over!
Dan Parkerson December 30, 2012 at 02:48 AM
I agree about Kevin McKeown. No one else on the old Council comes close to caring about residents rather than developers. We'll see about the new guys, but Kevin has always been there for us for many years already and deserved to be mayor, so at least he should be Person of the Year.

Kevin McKeown has my vote for Person of the Year. Footloose capital is ruthlessly planning to remove the freedom to use city space from citizens of Santa Monica. As these plans unfold Kevin is showing himself to be capable of the quick actions needed to head them off before it is too late.

City Councilman Kevin McKeown also has my vote for Santa Monica Person of the Year. He is a true public servant and has worked and continues to work tirelessly and with integrity for the people of Santa Monica and for the betterment of our community.

The entire former city council for having the courage to protect our constitutional rights for separation of church and state.

Kevin McKeown has my vote for all the reasons stated above. He has consistently proved that he believes that Santa Monica City government should be for the benefits of residents. He's been there for us for years. He listens. He responds. He actually reads the documents produced by the City Staff and consultants. He's prepared. He follows his conscience, not party dictates. He has integrity.and the respect of residents. That's why he consistently gets the most votes in election after election. He fights for sane development that will benefit residents and not cause the city to implode. He's definitely my man of the year.

Councilmember Kevin McKeown gets my vote. He is the most knowledgeable, hardest-working member of the City Council, and he ably represents the residents of Santa Monica, i.e., the people who vote him into office time after time.

Yes, Zina, so how about three more?
