CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY 1944, Universal, 93 min, USA, Dir: Robert Siodmak

A troubled singer (Deanna Durbin) spends a stormy night in New Orleans spinning a tale of woe for a broken-hearted soldier: She married a mama’s boy who's locked up in prison, but she still carries a torch for him. Siodmak cleverly unfolds W. Somerset Maugham's backtracking story, while Gene Kelly (!) uses his avuncular charm to mask a murderous streak. A wickedly delightful alternative to proper Yuletide fare.

COMFORT AND JOY 1984, Universal, 106 min, USA, Dir: Bill Forsyth

Recently dumped and pining for some yuletide affection in the days leading up to Christmas, Glasgow radio DJ Alan "Dickie" Bird (Bill Paterson) spots a cute girl sitting in the back of a Mr. Bunny ice cream truck, and follows the vendor vehicle through a tunnel. Much like Alice descending into the rabbit hole, Dickie's curiosity leads him into a world of complete absurdity as he gets caught in the gooey crossfire of an ice cream truck turf war. With Clare Grogan, Alex Norton and Roberto Bernardi.
