Get Out and Go: Earth Day and Easter Celebrations

Also this weekend, there's a free magic show, a concert and a pair of art-show opening receptions.

Happy Earth Day, Passover, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter. Phew.

With all those holidays happening this weekend, there's a basketful of events and activities taking place in Santa Monica. On the bill are celebrations of the environment, Easter egg hunts, a free magic show, opening receptions for art shows and a concert. If none of those things interest you, we wonder what would.

Before we dive into the weekend planner, note that the Marion Davies Guest House at the will be closed Saturday, and that Santa Monica Public Libraries will be closed Sunday. The farmers markets, however, will operate as usual—and there will be ponies at the Main St. one. Lookie here:

1. Celebrate the Earth With CELP

Where/When: Children's Activity Room at the ; Friday, 2 to 4 p.m

Why Go: Kids will get a chance to learn more about the environment through eco-paper-making, worm-composting and other activities. Intended for children in kindergarten through the fifth grade, the event is presented by the Catalina Environmental Leadership Program and sponsored by the .

Where/When: ; Friday, 3 to 5 p.m.

Why Go: Protesters will try to increase awareness about the dangers of leaded gasoline being used by propeller planes at SMO. The action, sponsored by the Venice Neighborhood Council's Santa Monica Airport Committee, will take place at Bundy Dr. and Airport Ave., at the east end of the airport.

3. Naam Yoga LA Earth Day Celebration

Where/When: on Friday, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.; on Friday, 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Why Go: Participants will focus on bringing strength, healing, light and harmony to themselves, their loved ones, Santa Monica, the world and regions in need of aid. A portion of all proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross.

4. Earth Day at Jurlique

Where/When: ; Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Why Go: Recycle any cosmetic or skincare product at the store, and you'll get 25 percent off your purchase and a reusable tote (while supplies last). The discount doesn't apply to Clarisonic products, skin-care sets, bundles or gift certificates. The offer is valid through Tuesday.

5. Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf Earth Day Discount

Where/When: Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (all locations); Friday, varies

Why Go: Customers who bring in their own mugs will get 10 cents off the purchase of a beverage. The shops—which are located on the , , ,  and Ocean Park Boulevard—are also selling their own environmentally friendly tumblers.

6. Space Shuttle Swan Song

Where/When: John Drescher Planetarium, ; Friday, 8 p.m.

Why Go: Following the weekly "Night Sky Show" at 7 p.m., a second program will recap the history and politics of the shuttle program since the return to flight after the Challenger accident. Also to be discussed is what will happen to the surviving shuttles and what comes next for American human spaceflight.

Pricing: $5 ($4 for children under 12 and seniors; $9 with "The Night Sky Show")

7. 19th Annual Peter Rabbit Day

Where/When: ; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Why Go: The 19th annual Easter Event will feature face painting, egg hunts and coloring, as well as photo opportunities with the Easter Bunny. Also, the will be there with a squad car for kids to explore.

8. Easter Sunday Pony Rides

Where/When: ; Sunday, 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Why Go: Move over, bunnies—the Sunday farmers market has ponies. Kids can enjoy riding the animals while their parents pick up their choice foods at the market.

9. Easter Sunday Champagne Brunch Buffet

Where/When: ; Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Why Go: Indulge in the hotel's champagne brunch, which will feature made-to order omelettes and waffles, gourmet eggs benedict and grilled cheese, sushi and raw-bar selections, grill and carving stations, a dessert display and more.

Pricing: $74 for adults, $37 for children (plus tax and gratuity)

10. Locanda del Lago Easter Dinner

Where/When: ; Saturday, 4 to 10 p.m.

Why Go: The restaurant, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, will feature a prix-fixe menu with holiday specialties from Italy’s Lake Country.

Pricing: Three courses for $55 per person, four courses for $69 per person, à la carte dishes for $10 to $32, optional wine pairings for $24 (plus tax and gratuity)

11. Santa Monica College's Workforce & Economic Development Division's Free Clean Energy Training Program: Intro to Energy Efficiency and Auditing, Part 1

Where/When: SMC's Bundy Campus; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Why Go: This class is part of a broader effort to create a well-trained workforce to promote renewable-energy development. The courses cover energy fundamentals, theory and technical application and apply to fields ranging from design to engineering to manufacturing. Go here for more info.

12. Magician David Groves: Astonishment in the Afternoon!

Where/When: MLK Auditorium at the Main Library; Saturday, 2 p.m.

Why Go: Groves' show is five years in the making, and he'll be soon be performing it on cruise ships. RSVP to David.Mystery@gmail.com or 310.962.7051.

13. Immanent Domain Art Show Reception

Where/When: ; Saturday, 6 to 9 p.m.

Why Go: Curated by Allen Tombello, the exhibit features works by eight painters who examine the "slippery slope between the post-Stella status of painting as object and the stubborn continuity of painting as it plays across the proscenium of the canvas through non-symbolic, non-figurative performance," according to the studio. The exhibit runs through May 28.

14. Opening Reception for Michel Alexis
' The Body of the Text and Jennifer Faist
's Reflection

Where/When: Ruth Bachofner Gallery at ; Saturday, 5 to 7 p.m.

Why Go: New York painter Michel Alexis' work, 20 years in the making, incorporates selections of text by modernist writer Gertrude Stein. "While the words themselves have left Alexis’ canvases, remnants of the motion and form of the written word are suggested through sweeping, calligraphic markings," the studio said. The exhibition runs through June 4.

15. Silken Veils by Leila Ghaznavi

Where/When: ; Friday and Saturday, 8:30 p.m.

Why Go: Puppetry, animation and poetry collide in this live performance, which was nominated for an award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The story revolves around an Iranian woman who muses about love and recalls memories of the 1979 revolution and the war between her country and Iraq. The performance also features music composed by two Iranian artists.

Pricing: $20 general admission, $15 for seniors and students

16. Artist Meet and Greet

Where/When: Mindfulnest (2711 Main St.); Saturday, 4 to 8 p.m.

Why Go: Get acquainted with some of the local artists who craft the artisan gifts available at this store. Owners Jennifer Hardaway and Diane Jackson buy half of the store's offerings from local craftspeople.

17. Passion & Stillness: A Celebration of Franz Liszt's Bi-Centenary

Where/When: ; Saturday, 8 p.m.

Why Go: Steven Vanhauwaert and Danny Holt will delve into Liszt's well-known Les Preludes and more obscure Battle of Huns on their Steinway concert grand pianos. The Huns performance will also feature Mark Alan Hilt playing music from a 2,131-pipe Schantz organ.
