Get Out and Go: Lily Tomlin, Betty White, Josh Duhamel Visit Santa Monica

Also this weekend, there's a garden tour; a Coachella pre-party; and an immunization clinic for kids.

If this weekend has a theme, it would probably be "celebrity." Lily Tomlin, Betty White and Josh Duhamel will be here for various events, and there's also a screening of a Joan Rivers documentary, discussion by a documentary filmmaker and class on writing for TV shows.

1. Carlie & Doni Help Save the Theatre

2. American Red Cross of Santa Monica's Red Tie Affair

Where/When: ; Saturday, 5 to 9 p.m.

Why Go: The Betty White "revival" will continue in Santa Monica on Saturday night when the bestows her with the Crystal Cross Award. Also at the Red Tie Affair, actor Josh Duhamel—who is a Red Cross Celebrity Cabinet member—will receive the Red Cross Spirit Award for his recent participation in the Red Cross' in Santa Monica. 3. 8th Annual Theodore Payne Native Plant Garden Tour

Where/When: across Los Angeles, including Santa Monica; Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Why Go: Discover ways to save water; reduce pesticides; and attract birds, butterflies, and other creatures to your garden on this self-guided tour of 35 private gardens across the Los Angeles Basin. Go here for more info.

4. Can We Talk ... to a Temple Member?

Where/When: ; Saturday, 7 p.m.

Why Go: Hosted by comedienne and Temple member Wendy Hammers, this event will revolve around a screening of the critic-approved documentary Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work. (Check out our recent profile on the synagogue right .)

5. Reboot Your Life Juice Cleanse Demonstration and Film Discussion

Where/When: ; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Why Go: Try out samples of various fruit and vegetable juices, and learn about their health benefits at this event put on by Dole Food Company and Reboot Your Life, a health and wellness company led by health advocate Joe Cross. Recipe demonstrations will be part of the program, as will be a discussion by Cross about his documentary film, Fat Sick and Nearly Dead, which chronicles him dropping 100 pounds.

6. Falling Whistles Charity Event

Where/When: ; Saturday, 8 p.m.

Why Go: Heading to Coachella this year? Get amped for the fest at this unofficial pre-party, which will feature music by Groove Monsters, a group that cites Daft Punk and Gorillaz among its influences. The event is doubling as a fundraiser for Falling Whistles, an organization that has rescued hundreds of children from war zones in the Congo.

7. "Hamlet/Oedipus"

Where/When: ; Friday, 8 p.m.; Saturday, 2 and 8 p.m.; Sunday, 2 and 7 p.m.

Why Go: This innovating play presents the Oedipus story through Shakespearean language and is making its world premiere at SMC. The production, which is presented by the SMC Theatre Arts Department, ends Sunday.

8. Beach House Lecture

Where/When: ; Saturday, 2 to 4:30 p.m.

Why Go: This new series hosted by the Santa Monica Conservancy doubles as a public-lecture presentation and training class for prospective docents at the Annenberg Community Beach House. The latest installment will feature Christy McAvoy of the Historic Resources Group talking about historic structures, and John Berley of Frederick Fisher Partners discussing construction of the beach house.

9. Writing for TV Talk Shows Holly Wortell

Where/When: ; Saturday, 12 to 3 p.m.

Why Go: Want to get your script on TV but don't know where to begin? You might want to tune in to this eight-week class, during which Wortell will teach students how to write and pitch ideas for monologue jokes, show segments, field pieces and more.

10. Miss Nelson Is Back

Where/When: ; Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m.

Why Go: If you still haven't caught this production, Sunday will be your last chance. Friendly for all ages, the performance features the story of students who take on their substitute teacher. It's based on the book series by Harry G. Allard and James Marshall.

11. MESS (Media Ecology Soul Salon)

Where/When: ; Saturday, 3 p.m.

Why Go: maestro Gerry Fialka will conduct interviews with modern thinkers, discussing "the metaphysics of their callings and the nitty-gritty of their crafts," he said.

12. Health Checkups and Immunizations Clinic and Fair

Where/When: ; Saturday, 12 p.m.

Why Go: Low-income families whose kids need to get checkups and immunizations to enter kindergarten and the first grade should take note of this event, for which educators and health-care providers will be on hand. When kids are finished with the boring part, they can enjoy the Fun Zone, which will feature a moon bounce, self-defense demonstration and Teddy Bear Clinic put on by the University of California, Los Angeles.
