Grab & Go Planner: Chess, Bikes and More

This week, we've got activities to unleash your inner Bobby Fisher and memories of your favorite teacher.

Hi there, busy parents! Thanks for taking the time to check out the newest Grab and Go Kids Planner, where we at Santa Monica Patch search high, then we search low, and next we the search the very middle to bring you the top five family-friendly activities.

Did you hear of what promises to be a super-fun event? Know of an entertaining one going on right this moment? Well, by all means (but mostly, by way of the comment box below) share the details with us! Oh for shame—did we miss an activity that everyone is just raving about? Did we suggest an event that caused a marathon tantrum? Let us know of our error too, for we at Patch always want to hear from you. And we promise to try to do better next time!

Family Best Bets of the Week

Where/When: ; Saturdays and Sundays, 11 a.m. (through May 29)

Why Go: We all remember that one special teacher who helped us to thrive, and in this musical based on the popular picture book by Patricia Polacco, Mr. Falker is that teacher for Trisha as she copes with the challenges of her learning disability. So go cheer on Trisha, relieve your own moments and just have a great time. Warning: You may want to go track down your own favorite teacher afterward to thank them!

Pricing: $6, 12 & under; $8, 13 and up

Where/When: ; Wednesday, 3 p.m.

Why Go: Based on nothing more than a few chess games with my late grandfather, I’ve always believed I was a brilliant chess player. Access your own inner Bobby Fisher with this program designed for all ages and skill levels, while I bask in the memories of when I thought I was a great player (before I played a non-relative).

Pricing: Free

Where/When: ; May 21st from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Why Go: Culture and exercise combine into one event! Grab a sneak peek of artist Blue McRight’s latest work and architect Warren Wagner’s green living projects, or tour the museum’s current exhibits. Rest at the Edgemar Center (designed by Frank Gehry) to learn about the Buy Local program, and then explore the rest of Main Street. So hook up the bike trailer and pedal on over to the SMMoA for fun!
