Grammy-nominated Violinist to Play at Samohi

Philippe Quint will play March 11 with the New West Symphony at at Barnum Hall at Santa Monica High School.

Violinist Philippe Quint will make his New West Symphony debut on the fourth Masterpiece Series concert of the season in Santa Monica.

Quint will play Eric Wolfgang Korngold’s Concerto in D Major for Violin and Orchestra, Opus 35. The program will also include the Overture to The Barber of Seville by Gioachino Rossini and the Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Opus 92 by Ludwig van Beethoven.

The New York Times said the Russian-born violinist has “…power, breadth of tone and passion" and the Cincinnati Enquirer called him a musician of "a modern day Paganini." 

He received two Grammy Award nominations for both his recording of the William Schuman Violin Concerto and the Eric Wolfgang Korngold Violin Concerto—the work he will perform on his New West Symphony appearances).

Quint began his studies at the Moscow Special Music School for the Gifted and made his solo orchestral debut at age nine. After immigrating to the United States he earned both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from The Juilliard School of Music. He has appeared as soloist with major orchestras and conductors throughout the world.

Mann is the music director of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and the associate conductor of the San Diego Symphony.  A Rhodes Scholar, he studied at Oxford where he won the annual competition to become the principal conductor of the Oxford University Philharmonia.  The winner of the Vienna Philharmonic’s Karajan Fellowship at the Salzburg Festival, he has served as cover conductor for the Cleveland Orchestra and as the Schmidt Conducting Fellow of the Indianapolis Symphony. 

Mann is active as a guest conductor throughout the United States and Europe.
