Update: One Killed, Another Wounded in Santa Monica Alley Shooting

SMPD says shooting was a drive-by in an alley near the 1500 block of Michigan Avenue.

One man is dead and another was wounded today in Tuesday morning shooting in Santa Monica, police said.

The shooting occurred in an alley near the 1500 block of Michigan Avenue about 8:15 a.m., said Santa Monica police Sgt. Richard Lewis. Both men were hospitalized with gunshot wounds to the upper torso. Lewis told Patch at 12:46 p.m. that the name of the victim who died is not being released, and that investigators are following leads on the suspects.

According to a preliminary investigation, the men were approached by a suspect on foot, who opened fire on them and fled, Lewis said. Police are looking for a Hispanic man in his 20s to 30s and said that he possibly arrived and fled in a blue Infiniti.

Lewis said they cannot confirm if the incident is gang related and added there is no connection to the June 7 shootings at Santa Monica College.

No school lockdowns were ordered.

Lewis said the police are also updating an investigation to a shooting that happened on Sunday in the 3000 block of Exposition Boulevard.

Sam Scheller, who lives near 16th Street and Michigan Avenue, said he heard six shots Tuesday morning and saw the ambulance arrive quickly. He said he's lived in the neighborhood for 20 years and saw a fatal shooting in the same location in 1997.
