Power Restored to Hundreds in Downtown

Crews in the area might have hit an underground cable line, triggering an outage that affected 716 customers Thursday afternoon.

Electricity shut off briefly Thursday afternoon for more than 700 Southern California Edison customers in downtown Santa Monica.

Power was restored to all but 53 as of 3 p.m. after equipment problems triggered an outage, according spokeswoman Vanessa McGrady.

The utility company was looking into an unconfirmed report that crews digging in the area hit an underground cable line in an area bounded by Fourth Street, Broadway, Santa Monica Boulevard and the , she said.

The outage was first reported at 1:15 p.m., and affected 716 customers south of Wilshire Boulevard, north of Pico Boulevard, east of Ocean Boulevard and west of Ninth Street.

According to the Santa Monica Police Department, traffic signals were out along Fourth Street at Olympic Boulevard and Broadway, as well as along Ocean at Santa Monica and Arizona Avenue.
