Clothes, Books, Scenic Views: An SM Treasure Map

From work clothes to books to cardio, a low-dollar day is on its way.

Santa Monica has a reputation as a well-to-do beach town. Some even think that enjoying the city is out of reach for people who don't want to empty their wallets and purses. But as long-time locals like me will tell you, it isn't true. Here are five examples to prove the point.

1.

At the Santa Monica Public Library's biggest branch, free books are available in a few racks outside of the . The books are among the hundreds of items that are donated each day to the nonprofit, in-house organization; proceeds directly benefit the SMPL.

2. Goodwill Industries Store & Donation Center

It's not unusual to find Lucky, Seven Jeans, Express and other name brands at this Goodwill location. More often than not, this store's biggest bargains are in the jeans section. Paying $7.99 for a pair of pants that retails up to $150 makes you feel as if someone donated them straight to you. Goodwill also has an outreach program that helps clothe people in need.

3. Santa Monica Stairs

Here, you can get a cardio workout without the price tag attached. There are two sets of stairs, the most popular being the wooden one. Either way, expect to climb more than 300 steps in one roundtrip. Insider tip: The wooden steps are easier on the feet, even if they take a little longer.

Long-time locals like myself often take for granted some attractions here in town. Many of them even have free admission, like the pier and its nearby and interactive . Insider tip: Be sure to watch the carousel at night—its lights illuminate the shoreline.

5.

One of 26 parks, this one stands out for its scenic views of the beach, playground and basketball court. Visitors will also appreciate its closeness to paved walking and biking paths.

Appreciating places like these, we're reminded how—at our disposal—we have free, million-dollar views amid the California sunshine.
