Pacific Park Ferris Wheel to Go Green for Earth Day

The wheel will feature a special light show on Friday.

On Mar. 26, the Ferris wheel at Pacific Park went black for Earth Hour, which lasted from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. The event was part of a global push to raise awareness about environmental conservation.

Almost a month later, on Friday, the wheel will reflect another environmental effort: Earth Day. From about 7:30 p.m. to 12 a.m., the wheel will feature a variety of patterns and green colors in honor of the eco-holiday.

On Friday night, PacPark.com will feature live footage of the spectacle.

The Pacific Wheel is more than an incidental contributor to the environmental-awareness effort; it's the only solar-powered Ferris wheel in the world and has 160,000 energy-efficient LED lights. The environmentally friendly amusement attraction saves more than 75 percent more energy than traditional Ferris wheels that use incandescent bulbs.

Also, last year, Pacific Park received an honor for Excellence in Stewardship of the Natural Environment from the the City of Santa Monica, the Santa Monica and the nonprofit Sustainable Works.
