Small Businesses in Santa Monica Want You to Buy Local

The city's Buy Local Santa Monica campaign is encouraging residents to consider small local businesses for their holiday shopping.

For fiscal year 2010/2011, retail businesses brought in over $26 million in tax revenues to the city of Santa Monica, according to Jennifer Taylor, Economic Development Administrator.

Over ten percent of that came from small independent businesses. But Taylor was quick to point out that small businesses in the city contribute much more than just sales tax revenue.

"They're supporting our schools. They're supporting our parks," Taylor said. "These businesses are owned by Santa Monica residents, and employ Santa Monica residents."

There are over 420 businesses participating in the city's Buy Local Santa Monica campaign, which has a website highlighting many of the city's small businesses. The campaign is not limited to small businesses.

But Taylor says that according to various studies done both locally and nationally, small businesses do contribute more, even in just dollars, than big businesses do.

"For every $100 spent in a Santa Monica business, $45 stays in the local economy.  If it’s a locally owned independent store, the figure jumps up to $68 that stays in our local economy," she said.

When asked about big box stores offering better prices on merchandise, Taylor agreed that is the perception.

"It's not always the case," she said. "A lot of our businesses are very competitive."

In addition, she pointed out, many local merchants offer unique gift items that can't be found anyplace else.

Taylor also agreed that the various Occupy protests and a generally anti-corporate mood is helping.

"I think there's an increased awareness of buying local," she said. "People are seeing the value. Occupy just helps raise awareness."

The Buy Local Campaign is also offering a holiday gift guide on their site.
