Every summer my family goes camping at Sycamore Canyon. However May's Springs fire burned about 12,000 acres in Pt. Mugu State Park, charring much of our beloved campground. Last weekend we stopped by to survey the damage as we have reservations for August. The main camping area, the loop that contains most of the sites 1-40, is pretty charred, as you will see in the photos I have posted. There is another group of campsites, sites 41-58 towards the left which seemed to be untouched by the fire. Those spots are fewer and harder to come by. They do not reserve individual spaces so its first come first serve. You would have to arrive early to get one of these sites. Sadly we decided to cancel this year. The general area just felt to dismal for a weekend stay. Hopefully mother nature and the state park service will be able to bring this area back to life by 2014.
