2 A.M. Temp at Pier Breaks 1968 Record

How hot was it at 2:18 a.m. at the Santa Monica Pier? Unusually hot!

A freak overnight wind gust helped to break an old heat record Thursday at the Santa Monica Pier.

It was 83 degrees at 2:18 a.m. because a northeast wind "increased and resulted in quick warming to the low 80s from the mid 70s," the National Weather Service reported.

"This was an unusual high temperature record," the weather service said.
