Welcome to another edition of The SM AM Report. As has been the case for the much of the past week, we've been busy updating you on the latest developments in the synagogue bombing. Ron Hirsch, who has been linked to the explosion, is due in court today in Ohio.

The Main Event

  • Hayden Panettiere and Rob Machado are co-hosting an event that will benefit the Surfrider Foundation and be held today at . Ten percent of proceeds from sales of Surfrider items sold exclusively at the store will go to the foundation. Thirteen Bloomingdale's stores are participating in the Surfrider effort, and the company is making a $25,000 donation to the group as well.

The Runner-Up

  • Starting at 7:30 p.m., the presents a reading and discussion with four of the poets featured in the book Poets of the American West. Carol Davis, Teresa Chuc Dowell, Jeffrey Schultz and Lynne Thompson will be in attendance. Editor Lowell Jaeger describes the collection of poems as a “chance to experience life widely and to reflect on your experiences deeply.”

Other Happenings

  • —the project that provides counseling, guidance and ongoing mentoring to youth by bonding them with homeless animals—celebrates the graduation of its third program of 2011. At the ceremony, young people will be congratulated for having successfully trained dogs so that they are suitable for adoption. While the program is based in Santa Monica, the graduation will take place at Phoenix High School in Venice at 11:30 a.m.
  • The winner of 's My Favorite Teacher Contest will be recognized at the book store during an Educator Appreciation Event starting at 4 p.m. Refreshments will be served, and book talks will be held as well. RSVP to 310.260.0158 or crm2575@bn.com.
  • Movies on the Deck continues at this evening with a screening of Shrek, hosted by and "Shrek the Musical," which is playing at the Pantages. The first 100 people who show up will get free Shrek ears and be entered into a drawing to win tickets to a performance of the musical. As usual, the movie will be shown on the Dining Deck starting at 7 p.m.
