Feb. 28: Homeless Count Results to Be Presented

Also today, the public weighs in on the possible return of Cirque du Soleil; local organizations celebrate their 2010 feats; and Samohi bands unite with the UCLA Brass Ensemble.

Welcome to the last day of February. In case you've been snoozing, no, this isn't a leap year.

No big surprise: It was a busy weekend on Santa Monica Patch. We covered the Santa Monica College men's basketball team in the state playoffs; the Boys & Girls Club invaluable volunteer Brittany Quach; Meals on Wheels West that Chef Gordon Ramsay will be on their LA Marathon charity team; and the Spirit Awards by the beach.

Also, we presented of Samohi students performing the Threepenny Opera; a pictorial recap of last week; and reasons why Bergamot Station should be on your radar, (although it presumably is already).

The Main Event

  • The results of this year's  will be unveiled during the Social Services Commission meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. in the East Wing of the . An analysis of the findings, as well as comments from organizers and the public, are also part of the agenda. About 200 volunteers and 30 members of the city staff participated in this year's count. 

The Runner-Up

  • The City will solicit public opinions about the possible return of Cirque du Soleil during a community meeting to be held at the . The discussion, which starts at 7 p.m., will also allow residents to voice their opinions about the use of the beach parking lot in question (1550 PCH) for other cultural events.

Other Happenings

  • Local businesses and government leaders will hail accomplishments made over the course of 2010, and present new promo efforts to continue the feats through 2011. The get-together will take place from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Annenberg Community Beach House.
  • bands will welcome the UCLA Brass Ensemble for a free concert in Barnum Hall at 7 p.m.
  • Tonight, the Airport Commission convenes for the first time since Nov. 22. On the massive agenda (available here) is public comment regarding the future of SMO, the of Commissioner Jean Gebman and noise-management reports. The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. at .

Last but Not Least

  • Entertainment-industry pros will talk with teens about breaking into the biz, in the 's Multipurpose Room. The discussion, intended for students in grades 6 through 12, will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
