On Wednesday, we broke out stories on high school student athletes in Santa Monica being ranked in the CIF polls, and Santa Monica College getting more than $200,000 in rebates for its energy-saving efforts. Also, Santa Monica Patch columnist/stand-up comedian Robbie Pickard made a strong case for why "real" football will be a lot more fun to watch on Super Bowl Sunday.

The Runner-Up

  • The end of "Fireside at the Miles" is just around the corner (the last show happens Saturday), but today's event just might raise the roof. Inside Hip-Hop 2 will feature live performances by Anacron, the L.A. Breakers and more, and be hosted by Pocho Joe with DJ Jedi. The event takes place, as usual, at the ; tickets are $10 for adults, and half as much for kids, seniors and students.

Other Happenings

  • A screening of Amy Adams' recent comedy Leap Year will happen at the from 2 to 3:45 p.m. It's free, of course, and part of the library's ongoing "In Case You Missed It" film series. Oddly, , this year actually isn't a leap year.
  • As of late, CityTV has been rolling out a slew of programs connected to its partnership with Cal State University, Dominguez Hills. Today sees the final introduction of a new show: MUS 100: Introducing Music. As with other programs in the partnership, this one can be viewed for class credit. It will air from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on Thursdays; and be hosted by Scott Morris, who heads up the college's guitar department.
  • The School Board meets at 4 p.m. at the Malibu City Council Chambers. The agenda is packed; check it out right here. 

Last but Not Least

  • On Wednesday, we wrote about 's spotlight on scotches; today, the bar/restaurant is doing a similar focus on Quebec-brewed beer. Enjoy from 5 to 10 p.m.
