July 6: Downtown Santa Monica Gets a Fresh Boost

Also happening today is the launch of a new free-movie series and the latest edition of "The Moth."

The Main Event

  • A fresh effort to draw people to downtown Santa Monica will launch today with a news conference and yet-unrevealed performance on the  between Broadway and Arizona. The event will also formally introduce the Bayside District Corporation's new name, Downtown Santa Monica Inc., and the organization's upcoming strategies, including the Cinema on the Street and Dating Downtown series. Mayor and Downtown Santa Monica Inc. CEO Kathleen Rawson will be on hand for the event, which starts at 10:30 a.m.

The Runner-Up

  • Meanwhile, the aforementioned Cinema on the Street series also launches today, with a free screening of The Princess Bride on the 1200 block of the promenade (outside ). It starts at about 7:30 p.m., and parking in the downtown city structures will be a flat $5 after 6 p.m.

Other Happenings

  • The construction of a four-story, 190,000-square-foot building where production offices would be housed at 2834 Colorado Ave. will be among the topics discussed when the Planning Commission convenes this evening. The meeting begins at 7:30 in the Council Chambers at . Go here for the full agenda.
  • The latest edition of The Moth, the live-storytelling performance series put on by the New York City nonprofit group of the same name, takes place at from 7 to 10 p.m. Tonight's theme is The Business, and admission costs $8.
  • Aspiring theater performers of all ages (well, 6 and up, at least) are invited to participate in a free workshop at the from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Attendees will get guidance from theater pros as they learn how to collaborate on music, language-arts and movement-oriented performances. If you plan to go, be sure to make a reservation ahead of time.

Last but Not Least

  • Dom Pérignon will be the featured drink at tonight's Champagne in the Garden, the 's new Wednesday night series. Glasses start tipping at 7:30.
