July 8: O'Neill Flagship Store Opens Downtown

The Main Event

• Downtown Santa Monica has been this week, and the buzz continues today with the addition of a new store on Second and Broadway: sporting-goods outlet O'Neill. The grand opening for the new flagship store will happen all weekend long, with a ribbon-cutting taking place today at 9 a.m. Mayor will be on hand for the ceremony, as will members of the , and surfers Roy Powers and Sage Erickson. All weekend, the store will feature 25 percent off all O'Neill clothes, 10 percent off all surf accessories and a $500 shopping-spree giveaway. Also, the first 20 customers who show up to the store Friday, Saturday and Sunday will get a free O'Neill T-shirt; and finally, purchases of $75 or more come with a free O'Neill beach bag.

The Runner-Up

• While some Southern Californians are bracing for the media swarm sure to accompany the visit of Prince William and his new bride, Catherine, others—including two Santa Monica hotels—are embracing it.  has a $6,000, two-night "Royal Rendezvous" offer; included is an ocean-view suite, poolside tea, and a Rolls Royce-escorted wine tasting and picnic in the Santa Monica Mountains. Meanwhile, 's $585, two-person "A Little Royalty" package features a suite with a private balcony, a dinner and a breakfast, and champagne.
