The Main Event

  • The first edition of Beach=Culture's two-part annual series of artist talks concludes today at the Annenberg Community Beach House. From 6:30 to 8 p.m., Santa Monica Cultural Affairs Supervisor Nathan Birnbaum will converse with the three awardees of the 2011 Santa Monica Artist Fellowship program—Phyllis Green, Meena Nanji and Analia Saban—about their creative processes and beyond. A public reception will be held afterward. Interested in going? Make an advance reservation here and get there by 6:15 p.m. The event is free, as is parking at Annenberg.

The Runner-Up

  • Five musicians who go to school in SM will lend their skills to a Los Angeles County High School for the Arts fund-raising effort tonight at the El Rey Theatre on the Miracle Mile. The show will feature six rock bands in total and start at 6 p.m. Tickets are $12. Go here for more info.

Other Happenings

  • An ongoing series of free films curated by Documental continues at from 6 to 10 p.m. On the bill tonight is Deconstructing Dad - The Music, Machine & Mystery of Raymond Scott, a doc that features John Williams, DJ Spooky and Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh. Director Stan Warnow will chat about his movie starting at 6 p.m., after which it will be screened.
  • Sci-fan fans may want to tune in to the free screening of Forbidden Planet (1956) happening from 2 to 4 p.m. at the . Afterward, film scholar Vivian Rosenberg will chat about the classic flick, plus there will be free popcorn and beverages. Sounds out of this world.
  • Drinking and driving don't mix, but drinking and writing do, apparently.  is promising a free keg of Guinness to whomever submits the best 500-1,000-word short story that features the following 10 words: balls, banks, barrel, believe, buzz, cult, Jameson, Kilwilkie, relic and Shakeweight.
