UPDATED: Water Line Bursts, Floods Parking Garage

A line carrying water for the building's fire sprinkler system at Montana Avenue ruptured at about 11:30 p.m. No residences were affected.

A parking garage at 209 Montana Ave. was flooded late Tuesday night when a line carrying water for the apartment building's fire sprinkler system burst, according to Santa Monica Public Works.

No residences were flooded, and water service was restored by 3 a.m., said the city's Water Resources Manager, Gil Borboa.

"These things don't happen all that often," said Borboa. "We always try to respond as quickly as possible. We had crews out there within the hour."

Borboa surmised that the ductile iron pipe, which could be at least 50 years old, had some hairline cracks that expanded with the shift in weather.

"This is a theory, but not necessarily the case here," he said. "It's always hard to pinpoint causes."

Crews were still on scene Wednesday morning mopping up the mess.
