Detective to Ride 25 Hours for Ferris Wheel Record (VIDEO)

At Santa Monica's Pacific Park, Los Angeles Police Department Detective Gus Martinez attempts to break world record as he raises money for Special Olympics Southern California.

Sitting 130 feet above the ocean, Los Angeles Police Department Detective Gus Martinez says he doesn't like heights.

But he's spending 25 hours riding the Pacific Wheel Ferris wheel in an attempt to break a Guinness World Record and to to raise money for the Special Olympics, an organization that he said has been wonderful for his son who has Down syndrome. At 23-years-old, Jason Martinez has won more than 30 gold medals in Special Olympics swimming competitions.

Upon setting the record for the longest ride on a Ferris wheel—expected at 8:30 a.m. Friday—Martinez and his son will light the official Southern California Law Enforcement Torch held by a Santa Monica police officer and Special Olympics Southern California athlete.
