Michael D. Rich is the think tank's new president and chief executive.

The Rand Corporation has a new president and chief executive, it was announced Tuesday. The Santa Monica-based nonprofit's fifth president will be Michael D. Rich.

Rich, 58, has served Rand in a leadership capacity for two decades. He will fill the seat vacated by James A. Thomsen, who served as president since 1989 and announced his retirement in April.

"I believe strongly in the proposition that rigorous and objective analysis leads to a more effective policies," Rich said in a statement. "I look forward to extending and strengthening that tradition in the years ahead."
