Viewfinder: St. Monica Catholic High School Superstars

The school has seen a handful of Academic Decathletes and sports phenoms rise to the occasion in recent weeks.

students have been making a name for themselves as of late.

On the academic front, the school's nine-member Academic Decathlon Team recently won Division 3 at the Southern California Private School Academic Decathlon, held at Bishop Alemany High School in Mission Hills in late January and early February. Moreover, the team came in fourth overall, beating every team in Division 2. In total, they won a whopping 42 medals.

The students included Kara Yasui, Leila Ehsan and Ryan Klippel in the Honors Division; Deepu Varughese, Anna Brewer and Adrian Santiago in the Scholastic Division; and Cassidy Carmen, Alejandro Rivas and Robin Callejas in the Varsity Division.

Meanwhile, the school also has standouts on the sports front: As we previously reported on Santa Monica Patch, senior Sam Holguin a letter of intent to play football for the United States Naval Academy in the fall; and senior Cory LaGuardia recently broke the season record for most points scored by a member of the girls basketball team.
