1450 Ocean: Indigo dyeing with B-Jo Trimble

Class# 2700.101: Saturday 4/5, 1-4pm
Cost: $30 + $10 cash material fee
Enroll online at http://activenet.active.com/SantaMonicaRecreation/registrationmain.sdi?source=adet.sdi&activity_id=3... or call 310-458-2239.

Learn how to use the organic blue dye (Indigofera tinctoria) that has been a staple of coloring fibers for over 5000 years. Though indigo can stain clothing and hands, it’s safe and fun to use! Mordants used will be soda ash and thiox. Bring sturdy aprons, clothes and shoes that can get wet/stained, and hair ties if you have long hair. Material fee includes dye, mordants, nitrile gloves, a dyeable silk scarf, plus samples of fibers for your dye sample collection: silk, wool and cotton fabric, yarn and old lace.

You’re also welcome to explore tie-dyeing while learning how to indigo dye. There are many ways to tie, fold, and utilize found objects to create beautiful patterns. Everyone goes home with a dye tutorial, a short history of natural dyeing, and dyed samples, plus a better understanding of how much fun natural dyes can be. Dye kits for home experimentation will be available for purchase.

Bjo (say Bee Joe) Trimble has been an artist since childhood, and sold her first piece at age 9. She learned natural dyeing from her pioneer grandmother, and costuming from her mother, who sewed for Warner Bros Studios. During her college years, back in the 1960s, Bjo taught sewing and dyeing classes to children and adults, and has continued such classes and workshops to this day. She has also taught teachers how to master and pass on these crafts. Together with her husband John, and her friend Theresa Wollenstein, she owns and operates Griffin Dyeworks & Fiber Arts and Ancient Earth Pigments. Bjo has traveled across the country, giving workshops. Few things makes her happier than to encourage creativity in others.
