1450 Ocean: Straw Hatmaking with Corina Haywood

Class # 2700.367: Friday 4/4, 6-9pm & Saturday 4/5, 11am-2pm, Cost: $60 + $20 cash material fee to instructor, sorry no drop ins. *Note this class takes place over two consecutive days* Enroll online at http://activenet.active.com/SantaMonicaRecreation/registrationmain.sdi?source=adet.sdi&activity_id=3... or call 310-458-2239.

For this workshop we will meet for two 3-hour sessions. In the first session you will design your own straw hat using a basic straw hood, using for inspiration various styles of hats: short brimmed fedoras, pork-pies, 20s cloches, top hats, 40s style tilt hats, and sculpted straw fascinators. In the second session you will learn the hand sewing techniques necessary to complete your hat, including sewing the head ribbon and adding hat bands, decorations and trim. Needles, thread, grosgrain ribbon and a straw hood are included in materials fee. Students are encouraged to bring their own scissors, thimbles and any extra materials they'd like to incorporate into the trimming of their hats. Basic hand sewing skills are recommended.

Corina Haywood studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, where she learned the foundation of her millinery skills. For the past ten years she has been exploring the relationship between art and fashion through her unique approaches to contemporary millinery construction and design. Her pieces have been collected by individuals, retailers and private label clients, and have been featured in Elle and Women's Wear Daily among other publications. Corina brings a hands-on, experiential approach to both her work and teaching. While passing down tricks of the trade, she mixes a sense of the past with a playful approach to materials, encouraging students to find their own design aesthetic and create a piece they'll love to wear! corinahaywood.com
