At 1450 Ocean: Writing about Place with Charles Hood

Cost: $20, online at https://recenroll.smgov.net/adet.sdi?activity_id=34067 or contact Community Classes at (310) 458-2239, communityclasses@smgov.net

This workshop looks at travel writing, local color, and what it means to locate yourself fully in a particular culture, ecosystem, or terrain. We’ll consider how to get past stereotypes and share ideas about the traveler’s responsibility to the landscape and cultures she or he visits. In-class writing prompts and professional examples will prepare students to go out and create magic on their own.

A Los Angeles native, Charles Hood has been a dishwasher, a factory worker, a ski instructor, and a nature guide in Africa. He attended Glendale College, Cal State Northridge, U.C. Irvine and the University of Utah, and also did Fulbright work in New Guinea, translating tribal poetry. For birdwatching, photography, or writing research, he has been to the South Pole (on a National Science Foundation Artists and Writers Grant), to each of the continents, and most of the way to the North Pole.

His ninth book, South x South, won the Hollis Summers poetry prize and was published in February by Ohio University Press; his eighth book, 25 Tigers, came out last year. His current projects include a survey of the Solar System titled 200 Moons, and a meditation on faith and history titled Melville in the Holy Land. Hood teaches writing, photography, and journalism at Antelope Valley College. He lives in Palmdale with a wife, a cat, a dog, two kayaks, and five mountain bikes. He just completed the 2013 Writer Residency at the Annenberg Community Beach House, where he wrote short fiction inspired by the portraits of painter Don Bachardy.
