Compost Giveaway

December is a great time to give next year’s garden a head start with the good dirt!  Gardeners have the opportunity to cart away free compost at Santa Monica’s Quarterly Compost Give-A-Way on Saturday, December 8th from 7:00 a.m. until 2:00pm or while supplies last at the City Yards - a big thank you to residents for all their efforts in recycling their yard trimmings!

Our compost is made from yard trimmings collected curbside every week and is processed at a nearby composting facility.  Compost has been recognized as a valuable soil amendment for centuries. Its use in gardens is an effective way to improve soil health, increase plant production, and reduce the use of water, chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

Residents should bring gloves and come prepared to scoop their own compost. While quantities are limited to (5) burlap bags per resident, there will literally be tons of material to go around. The City supplies residents with bags courtesy of a partnership with Groundwork Coffee. These bags which were once filled with coffee are being diverted from the landfill by being reused at this event.
