Opening Reception: 'NOMADIC CAMERA' by Lekha Singh

Nomadic Camera will be on view from April 5 to May 1 (6 pm - 9 pm) at Building Bridges in Bergamot Station with an opening and artist reception on Saturday, April 5th at 6 pm.

Nomadic Camera is an exhibition of two of Singh's photography series: Created Equal and Weeds. The intimate portraiture in Created Equal invites viewers to see themselves in another's image—juxtaposing monks in Bhutan and Cambodia with activist punks in Mexico, young children in India with old women in Afghanistan, these images transcend borders, class, and cultural boundaries. From the pastoral grains swaying gently in the breeze to dandelion stalks towering above the grass below, Weeds reveals the dynamic beauty hidden in plain sight. Weeds is printed on large 4x7 aluminum panels to synthesize the resilience of nature with the contemporary medium of photography.

Singh’s photos have been acquired by several prominent collections, including the Rubin Museum permanent collection. Her major exhibitions Nomadic Camera, Created Equal, African Journeys and The Other Half: Women in Focus have been displayed in museums throughout the United States, including the National Arts Club in New York City and The Women’s Museum in Dallas. Her photos are featured in National Geographic’s The Other Side of War: Women’s Stories of Survival and Hope, Bhutan, The Making of an Activist and Call to Love: In the Rose Garden with Rumi, and they have been published in The New York Times, Ode and Yoga +Joyful Living. Her fifth book, Pop-Up Pianos, was published in fall of 2012.
