Santa Monica Democratic Club Event Regarding Hotel Development and Hotel Workers

HOTEL DEVELOPMENT AND HOTEL WORKERS EVENT

With a development pipeline which includes both building new hotels and renovating existing hotels, the issue of a living wage has resurfaced in Santa Monica in a major way.  In the downtown area alone, current proposals include a Courtyard by Marriott and Hampton Inn (OTO Development on both), renovations of the Miramar (Dell Trust) and Wyndham (Felcor) to include condominiums, and a new hotel complex (Frank Gehry designed) at Ocean Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard.

The Santa Monica Democratic Club, long an activist proponent for a living wage, presents an update and discussion led by Rachel Torres, Political Director of Unite/H.E.R.E. (Hotel and Restaurant Employees), on the development agreements now under consideration and the union negotiations taking place with the developers.  The impacts on the City's residents by the developments, the union movement, and strategies for worker wage/benefit improvements are some of the aspects which will be discussed by the workers and club members.
