Santa Monica Adoptions Can Save These Lives

By Andrea Braver & J. Flora Katz

Coleen
There's no doubt about it. Colleen may be the most beautiful girl at the shelter these days. Look at those eyes, that expression of softness, somewhat sad, though definitely compelling.

Colleen is very depressed in her concrete and metal kennel. She lays on the cold floor, so inappropriate for an elegant young lady like her. She looks out between the bars every so often but, generally, faces the back of the kennel, feeling cast aside.

Colleen came into the shelter as a stray. Whoever her owner was did not care for her the way we hope she will be cared for once she leaves South L.A. She's got mats on her legs, a coat that needs shampooing. But, even before the transformation that a grooming will provide, she's more than easy on the eyes. Once out of her kennel, trotting in the sunshine, Colleen becomes flirtatious.  She's met admirers and charmed them totally. She's got a spirit of adventure, running through the play yard like a little pony. Yet when called over to you, she comes without hesitation. She loves the attention and is irresistible as she cuddles up next to you.

Colleen is a healthy 6 year old and currently weighs a skinny 43 pounds.  We hope she's got many a nutritious bowl of food left in her life, possibly in your home.  Colleen's Adoption ID No. is A1405931.

Izzy
What is Izzy? A terrier? A Schnauzer? A kid with a Mohawk? Guess he is all of those things. One thing we can all agree on -- he's very, very cute. And spirited.  Izzy is ready to rock 'n roll the minute you approach his cage. He'll come running up to the front, his curls picking up the breeze as he gallops over. He's always happy and carefree, not letting shelter life get him down.

Out in the play yard, he's sure to sniff every square inch, nose to the ground like a white and black vacuum cleaner. Once he's completed his investigation, and that may take some time, he's ready to socialize.

Izzy's owners did a good job of getting him used to people. He loves everyone and the feeling is returned by all. Izzy is now 10 years young. And young he is. Far more active than dogs half his age. He weighs 26 chunky pounds but he carries it well.  It's all muscle, he tells us.

Izzy would certainly appreciate a new home with a comfy bed and a family to make his life complete. And he deserves all that. Izzy's Adoption ID No. is A1407722.
